What is the percentage difference formula?
Divide the absolute gap by the average magnitude of the two values, then multiply by 100. Using magnitudes keeps the denominator meaningful for negative inputs.
Is percentage difference symmetric?
Yes. Swapping the first and second values does not change either the absolute difference or their average magnitude.
When should I use percentage change instead?
Use percentage change when one value is clearly the initial or baseline amount. It preserves direction and measures movement relative to that starting value.
Can percentage difference exceed 100 percent?
Yes. Values that are far apart relative to their average magnitude can produce a result above 100 percent.
What happens when both values are zero?
The percentage difference is undefined because the average magnitude is zero. The raw absolute difference is still zero, but there is no nonzero scale for a percentage comparison.
