Proper fractions have a magnitude below one and normally convert to percentages below 100%. Improper fractions can produce percentages of 100% or more: 5/2 is 2.5, or 250%. Negative fractions produce negative percentages, which can represent a decrease, loss, or value below a reference point. The denominator cannot be zero because division by zero is undefined. Decimal numerators and denominators also work, allowing ratios such as 7.5/10 to become 75%. Percentages make ratios easier to compare because every result uses the same base of one hundred. A score of 18/20 and a score of 45/50 have different raw values, but both equal 90%. The same conversion supports survey results, completion rates, sports statistics, financial returns, ingredient ratios, and probabilities. Remember that converting a fraction to a percentage does not change the underlying quantity; it only changes how that quantity is written. When a result repeats, decide how many decimal places your context requires. Classroom instructions may request a rounded answer such as 66.7%, while financial reporting might use 66.67%. Keep more digits during intermediate calculations and round only the final value to reduce error.
