About fraction exponents

A fraction exponent calculation applies the same power to both parts of a fraction. For an integer exponent n, the basic rule is (a/b)^n = a^n/b^n. This works because repeated multiplication places one copy of the numerator and denominator into every factor. After the powers are evaluated, the resulting numerator and denominator can be divided by their greatest common divisor to produce a fraction in lowest terms. This calculator performs those steps automatically and also gives a decimal approximation for comparison. Positive exponents describe repeated multiplication. For example, (2/3)^3 means (2/3) × (2/3) × (2/3), which equals 8/27. An exponent of one leaves the fraction unchanged. An exponent of zero produces 1 for every nonzero fraction because any nonzero number raised to the zeroth power is one. These rules apply equally to proper fractions, improper fractions, and negative fractions. A negative base produces a negative result only when the exponent is odd; an even exponent makes the result positive. Negative exponents do not make the answer negative. Instead, they tell you to take the reciprocal before applying the positive power. Thus (3/4)^-2 becomes (4/3)^2, or 16/9. A zero numerator cannot be used with a negative exponent because its reciprocal would require division by zero. Likewise, the original denominator must never be zero, since that does not define a valid fraction. Exact fraction results are often more useful than rounded decimals in algebra, probability, geometry, and scientific formulas. Keeping 8/27 instead of 0.296296 preserves the complete value and prevents rounding error from accumulating in later work.
