How to calculate waist-to-hip ratio
- Select the gender used for the screening threshold.
- Measure the relaxed waist at the midpoint between the lowest rib and hip bone, then enter the circumference.
- Measure around the widest part of the hips with the tape level, then enter that circumference.

Waist-to-hip ratio FAQ
What waist-to-hip ratio is considered healthy?
Common screening guidance uses 0.85 or lower for women and 0.90 or lower for men as lower-risk ranges. These cutoffs describe population risk and do not diagnose an individual condition.
How is waist-to-hip ratio calculated?
Divide waist circumference by hip circumference using the same measurement unit for both. A waist of 80 cm and hips of 100 cm produce a ratio of 0.80.
Is waist-to-hip ratio the same as waist-to-height ratio?
No. WHR compares waist with hips and emphasizes fat distribution, while WHtR compares waist with height and adjusts abdominal size for stature.
Can I use inches instead of centimeters?
Yes. The units cancel as long as both circumferences use the same unit, although the input labels here are presented in centimeters.
Why can two people with the same BMI have different ratios?
BMI does not indicate where body mass is carried. Two people can have the same weight and height but different waist and hip circumferences, leading to different fat-distribution patterns and risk profiles.
