How to calculate waist-to-height ratio

- Measure the waist at the midpoint between the lowest rib and top of the hip bone, then enter the value in centimeters.

What is a healthy waist-to-height ratio?
A ratio from 0.40 to below 0.50 is commonly used as a lower-risk screening range for adults. It is a guide, not a diagnosis, and personal risk depends on additional health factors.
Is waist-to-height ratio better than BMI?
The measures answer different questions: WHtR reflects central fat distribution, while BMI relates total weight to height. Using both can provide more context than relying on either measure alone.
Can I enter measurements in inches?
Yes, mathematically the ratio works with any unit as long as waist and height use the same unit. The field labels use centimeters, so convert both values consistently before entering them.
Where should I measure my waist?
Use a horizontal tape at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone after a normal breath out. Do not compress the skin, and repeat the measurement if placement is uncertain.
Does the ratio diagnose heart disease or diabetes?
No. It is a screening indicator associated with cardiometabolic risk and cannot establish a diagnosis. A clinician can interpret it with blood pressure, laboratory results, history, and symptoms.
