The calculation divides waist by height when both measurements use the same unit. A person with a 75 cm waist and a 165 cm height has a ratio of about 0.455. Because the units cancel, the result is a dimensionless number that can be compared across people who use centimeters or inches. The measure focuses on central fat distribution. Fat stored around the abdomen is more strongly associated with insulin resistance, high blood pressure, abnormal blood lipids, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease than fat stored in some other areas. Height provides context for the waist measurement, so the ratio can be more informative than using waist circumference alone. It also complements body mass index, which describes weight relative to height but does not show where body fat is carried. A practical public-health message is to keep the waist circumference below half of height. In this calculator, values from 0.40 to below 0.50 are described as the healthy range, values from 0.50 to below 0.60 indicate increased risk, and values of 0.60 or more indicate high risk. A value below 0.40 is not automatically healthier and may warrant attention to nutrition or body composition.
