Can sleep debt really be repaid?
Additional sleep can improve alertness and reduce some effects of short-term restriction, but recovery may take several consistent nights. Chronic sleep loss is not always erased by one weekend of sleeping late.
What does the sleep quality factor mean?
It represents the assumed restorative efficiency of planned sleep, on a scale from 0.1 to 1. A lower factor allocates more time per recovery night because less of the time is treated as effective sleep.
Why does the calculator use age?
Typical sleep requirements change substantially from childhood through older adulthood. Age selects a baseline recommendation, although personal medical and lifestyle factors can shift an individual's need.
Should I use time in bed or time asleep?
Use estimated time actually asleep for the most meaningful result. If you only know time in bed, subtract periods spent awake before sleep, during the night, and before getting up.
When should fatigue be discussed with a clinician?
Seek professional advice when daytime sleepiness is severe, persistent, or accompanied by snoring, breathing pauses, headaches, or impaired driving. A calculator cannot identify an underlying sleep or medical disorder.
