What formula does the calculator use?
It uses length multiplied by width multiplied by height multiplied by 0.52. The coefficient approximates the bladder as an ellipsoid and converts centimeter dimensions directly to milliliters.
Is bladder volume the same as post-void residual?
Only when the dimensions are measured shortly after the patient has attempted to empty the bladder. A pre-void scan instead estimates the amount present before urination.
How accurate is the ultrasound estimate?
Accuracy depends on bladder shape, measurement technique, equipment, and operator experience. Manual ellipsoid estimates and automated bladder scanner results may differ, especially at very low or high volumes.
What is a normal bladder capacity?
Functional adult capacity is often broadly described around 300 to 500 mL, but it varies with age, sensation, and clinical circumstances. A measured volume should be interpreted with timing, symptoms, and the reason for scanning.
