About the sleep calculator

This sleep calculator works backward from a planned wake time. It subtracts the desired amount of actual sleep and the time you expect to spend falling asleep, producing a practical target for getting into bed. It also divides the sleep duration by an approximate 90-minute cycle length to provide context. The result uses a 24-hour clock and automatically wraps to the previous evening when needed. Healthy sleep is more than a sequence of identical cycles. During the night, the brain moves through non-rapid-eye-movement and rapid-eye-movement stages, but cycle length varies between people and across the same night. Early cycles often contain more deep sleep, while later cycles contain more REM sleep. Ninety minutes is a useful planning approximation rather than a timer that can predict the precise moment a person will wake refreshed. Trying to shorten sleep merely to land on a cycle boundary can be counterproductive. Most adults generally need at least seven hours of sleep regularly, and many function best with seven to nine hours.
