What is the difference between gray and sievert?
Gray measures energy absorbed by matter per kilogram. Sievert applies radiation and sometimes tissue weighting to describe biological risk for radiation protection.
Why does distance change the result?
For an ideal point source, intensity falls with the square of distance. Real sources, shielding, and scatter can make the actual relationship different.
What radiation weighting factor is used for neutrons?
This simplified calculator uses a factor of ten. Formal neutron weighting depends on energy, so professional dose assessment should use the appropriate spectrum-specific value.
Can this calculator evaluate a CT scan?
Not reliably from dose rate and distance alone. CT effective dose needs scanner output, anatomy, scan length, protocol, and patient-specific conversion information.
Is the result suitable for regulatory reporting?
No, it is an educational estimate based on idealized conditions. Regulatory records require calibrated monitoring, approved methods, and review by qualified radiation safety personnel.
