About the ponderal index

The ponderal index, sometimes called the corpulence index or Rohrer's index, describes body mass in relation to height. It divides weight in kilograms by height in meters raised to the third power. By using height cubed rather than height squared, the measure attempts to account for the way body volume changes as a person becomes taller. This makes it a useful companion to body mass index when comparing people whose heights differ substantially. To calculate the value, convert height from centimeters to meters, cube that number, and divide weight by the result.
