Heart rate reserve is estimated maximum heart rate minus resting heart rate. It represents the range available between rest and maximum effort.
What is the Karvonen formula?
Target heart rate equals heart rate reserve multiplied by intensity, plus resting heart rate. Intensity is entered as a decimal, such as 0.70 for 70 percent.
How should I measure resting heart rate?
Measure while awake, calm, and fully rested before caffeine or exercise. Repeating the measurement on several mornings can reduce the effect of an unusual day.
Is 220 minus age an exact maximum?
No, it is a population-based estimate with considerable individual variation. Measured maximum heart rate can be higher or lower, so clinical or supervised testing may be preferable when precision matters.
