About the Berg Balance Test

The Berg Balance Test, also called the Berg Balance Scale, is a structured clinical assessment of functional balance. It contains fourteen tasks that move from basic transfers and unsupported positions to reaching, turning, stepping, tandem stance, and single-leg stance. A trained observer scores performance rather than asking the person to rate their own ability. Each task receives zero to four points, so the total ranges from zero to fifty-six, with higher totals representing better observed balance. The scale samples both static and dynamic control. Early items examine sitting, standing, and transfers. Later items challenge the ability to narrow the base of support, move the center of mass, change direction, and briefly rely on one leg. Because these activities resemble common daily movements, the score can help physical therapists and other clinicians document baseline function, identify areas needing intervention, and monitor change during rehabilitation. A score is calculated by adding all fourteen item scores. Common teaching ranges classify zero through twenty as high fall risk, twenty-one through forty as moderate risk, and forty-one through fifty-six as low risk. Fall risk also depends on diagnosis, medications, vision, cognition, blood pressure, footwear, environmental hazards, previous falls, and the use of mobility aids.
