About the 6 minute walk test

The six-minute walk test, often abbreviated 6MWT, measures how far a person can walk on a flat, firm surface during six minutes. It is a practical assessment of functional exercise capacity because walking uses the heart, lungs, circulation, muscles, balance, and motivation together. Clinicians commonly use the test when evaluating chronic lung disease, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, recovery after illness, and rehabilitation progress. The measured distance is useful on its own and can also be compared with a reference estimate for people of similar age and body size. This calculator applies published Enright reference equations. For men, predicted distance in meters equals 7.57 times height in centimeters, minus 5.02 times age, minus 1.76 times weight in kilograms, minus 309. For women, predicted distance equals 2.11 times height, minus 2.29 times weight, minus 5.78 times age, plus 667. Percent predicted is the observed distance divided by predicted distance, multiplied by 100. Average speed is distance divided by 360 seconds. These calculations make the result easier to compare, but they do not establish a diagnosis or a universal normal threshold. Test technique strongly affects distance. The walking course, standardized encouragement, use of oxygen, walking aid, footwear, recent exertion, and whether the person has completed a practice test should be documented. A short indoor course requires more turns and may reduce distance. Symptoms, heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and perceived exertion may provide important context before and after the walk. Repeat tests are most meaningful when conditions and instructions remain consistent. Reference equations were derived from particular study populations and may not fit every age, ethnicity, diagnosis, or mobility level. A result below the estimate can reflect cardiopulmonary limitation, pain, weakness, balance problems, unfamiliarity with the procedure, or temporary illness. Improvement over time may be more useful than a single comparison. Testing should follow the supervising clinic's safety protocol.
