Length conversion translates a distance or dimension from one unit into another without changing the physical quantity being measured. The metric system is organized around the meter and powers of ten: a kilometer is 1,000 meters, a centimeter is one hundredth of a meter, and a millimeter is one thousandth. A room might be measured in feet, a manufactured component in millimeters, a road distance in kilometers or miles, and a vessel's route in nautical miles. Converting all measurements to a common unit lets you compare values, combine dimensions, or verify that a part will fit. The calculator keeps the complete factor during computation and rounds only the displayed answer to a practical number of decimal places. Be careful to distinguish length from area and volume. Converting a linear foot to meters requires one application of the factor, but converting square feet to square meters requires squaring that factor. Cubic units require cubing it. This page handles linear measurements only. Also distinguish a statute mile from a nautical mile: the nautical unit is longer and is used in marine and aviation navigation. To check a conversion manually, multiply by the source unit's size in meters and divide by the target unit's size in meters. For example, five meters divided by 0.3048 produces approximately 16.4041994751 feet.
