About the CPS calculator

CPS means events per second. Depending on the activity, the event can be a typed character or a mouse click. This CPS calculator turns a total count and an elapsed duration into an average rate, making results from tests of different lengths easy to compare. A person who types 300 characters in 60 seconds and a person who types 150 characters in 30 seconds both average 5 characters per second, even though their test totals differ. For typing, characters per second measures every entered character, usually including letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces when the source test counts them. It differs from words per minute because WPM normally assumes a standardized word of five characters. To estimate WPM from character CPS, multiply CPS by 60 and divide by 5. A typing result of 5 CPS therefore corresponds to about 60 WPM under that convention. Actual typing-test scores can vary if mistakes are removed or if the test uses a different counting policy.
