How do I find an element's mass in a compound?
Multiply the element's atomic mass by its subscript in the chemical formula. Add every element's contribution to obtain the compound molar mass.
Must the inputs be in grams?
No, any mass unit works when both inputs use the same unit. The units cancel in the component-to-total ratio.
Why should all percentages add to 100?
A complete list of mutually exclusive components accounts for the entire sample. Small deviations can occur from rounding, impurities, or omitted trace components.
Is mass percent the same as volume percent?
No, mass percent compares masses while volume percent compares volumes. Conversion between them generally requires density information.
Can the component mass exceed total mass?
Not when both values describe the same sample on the same basis. That condition indicates a unit mismatch, transcription error, or incorrect definition of the total.
