Frequently asked questions
What is the mass percent formula?
Divide the component mass by the total mixture mass and multiply by 100. Both masses must refer to the same mixture and use compatible units.
Is mass percent the same as volume percent?
No, mass percent compares masses while volume percent compares volumes. They are not interchangeable unless density information is used for a conversion.
Should I use solvent mass or solution mass?
Use the final solution mass in the denominator. Solute mass divided only by solvent mass is a different ratio and gives a different result.
Why do my percentages not add to 100 percent?
The entered list may omit solvent or another component, or rounded values may create a small difference. A complete, internally consistent component list should total approximately 100 percent.
Can I enter masses in kilograms?
Yes, if every component and the total use kilograms, the percentage is unchanged. The displayed gram label simply indicates the expected common unit.
