How to Estimate Tree Leaves

How should I measure an irregular canopy?
Measure the widest crown diameter and another diameter at right angles, then use their average. For strongly asymmetric crowns, divide the canopy into sections and estimate each section separately.
What does average leaf area mean?
It is the one-sided surface area of a representative leaf, measured in square centimeters. Use leaves of different sizes and crown positions to avoid a biased average.
Should leaf mass be fresh or dry?
Use oven-dry or air-dry mass measured after the sample reaches a stable weight. Fresh leaf mass varies with recent rainfall, temperature, and time of day.
Is total leaf area the same as leaf area index?
They are related but not identical. Leaf area index is total one-sided leaf area divided by the ground area beneath the vegetation.
