About feed conversion ratio

Feed conversion ratio, commonly abbreviated FCR, measures how much feed an animal or group consumes to produce one unit of live-weight gain. It is widely used in poultry, swine, cattle, fish, shrimp, and other production systems because feed is often the largest variable expense. An FCR of 1.6 means 1.6 kilograms of feed were consumed for each kilogram of weight gained. When animals, time periods, and accounting methods are comparable, a lower ratio indicates more efficient conversion. The calculator first subtracts initial total weight from final total weight to find gain. It then divides feed consumed by that gain. Feed and weight must use the same mass unit for the ratio to be meaningful; kilograms are shown here, but pounds also produce the same dimensionless ratio when used consistently. Feed efficiency expresses the inverse relationship as a percentage: weight gain divided by feed consumed, multiplied by 100. An FCR of 1.6 corresponds to 62.5 percent feed efficiency under this simple definition. Accurate records matter more than extra decimal places. Feed consumed should represent feed actually eaten during the same period covered by the weight measurements. Subtract inventory remaining at the end and account for deliveries, transfers, spills, and measurable waste according to the farm's protocol. Initial and final weights should cover the same population. Group totals may come from individual weighing, representative sampling, or biomass estimates, but mixing methods can introduce bias. FCR values should not be compared without context. Species, genetics, age, sex, diet energy, temperature, stocking density, health, water quality, housing, and target market weight all influence conversion. Young animals often convert feed differently from animals near finishing weight. A ration that produces a low FCR may still be uneconomical if ingredients are costly, and rapid gain does not automatically imply good welfare or product quality. Compare results with relevant historical, breed, and production-stage benchmarks. Mortality and removals require a documented convention. A simple live-weight FCR based only on surviving final biomass can make a flock or tank with losses appear less efficient. Some operations calculate mortality-adjusted gain by adding the weight of animals removed or lost, while financial reporting may treat those losses differently. This calculator performs the transparent unadjusted calculation from the three entries and does not infer mortality. Use the ratio as one performance indicator alongside average daily gain, feed cost per kilogram of gain, health events, mortality, uniformity, and environmental conditions. Feed conversion ratio FAQ

Is a lower feed conversion ratio always better?

A lower FCR means less feed was recorded per unit of gain. It should still be evaluated with health, welfare, mortality, feed cost, and product-quality outcomes.

Can I use pounds instead of kilograms?

Yes, provided all three measurements use pounds. The ratio remains the same because the common unit cancels, although displayed gain is labeled in kilograms.

How should wasted feed be handled?

Use feed actually consumed when that quantity can be measured reliably. If records include waste, document the method and apply it consistently so comparisons remain useful.

Does this calculator adjust for mortality?

No, it calculates unadjusted FCR from initial biomass, final biomass, and feed. Add removed-animal weight to gain first if your production standard specifies a mortality-adjusted method.

Why did FCR worsen even though the diet did not change?

Temperature, disease, genetics, stocking, water access, feeder settings, age, and measurement errors can all affect conversion. Review operational records and animal health before attributing the change to feed alone.
