About growing degree units

Growing degree units, also called growing degree days or heat units in many contexts, summarize the temperature available for biological development. Crops and insects generally develop slowly below a lower threshold, more quickly through a useful temperature range, and no faster above an upper threshold. Accumulating daily units can help estimate emergence, leaf stages, flowering, maturity, pest activity, and other temperature-driven events more consistently than counting calendar days alone. This calculator uses the capped simple-average method. The daily maximum is limited to the upper cutoff, and the daily minimum is raised to the base temperature when it falls below that threshold. The two adjusted temperatures are averaged, then the base is subtracted. A negative answer is set to zero. For a corn-style Fahrenheit example with a maximum of 90, a minimum of 40, a base of 50, and an upper cutoff of 86, the adjusted temperatures are 86 and 50. Their average is 68, producing 18 Fahrenheit degree-days. Thresholds must match the crop, cultivar, pest model, and published guidance being used. Corn is commonly tracked with a 50 °F base and 86 °F upper cutoff in the United States, but other plants use different bases or no upper cap. Some models apply a simple average without adjusting the minimum, while others use single-sine, double-sine, hourly, or modified formulas that better represent temperatures crossing thresholds. Results from different methods are not automatically interchangeable. Fahrenheit degree-days and Celsius degree-days describe the same concept but have different numerical scales. A temperature interval of one Celsius degree equals 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees, so cumulative values must be converted or compared only with thresholds and targets in the same scale. Changing the selector converts the four entered temperatures; it does not convert previously calculated seasonal totals stored elsewhere. For seasonal tracking, calculate each day's value and add it to the running total from the model's specified start date, such as planting, emergence, January 1, or a biological event. Use daily maximum and minimum observations from a representative weather station. Field temperature can differ from an airport or regional station due to elevation, slope, canopy, soil moisture, urban heat, and sensor exposure. Missing observations and unusual microclimates can introduce meaningful error. GDU predicts temperature-dependent development, not yield or calendar date with certainty. Water stress, nutrition, photoperiod, disease, genetics, planting depth, and extreme weather can change actual crop progress. Treat accumulated units as a scouting and planning signal, then verify stages in the field. Follow the exact formula and thresholds supplied by the seed company, extension service, or integrated pest-management model before making production decisions.

The terms are often used interchangeably, but published models may define their formulas differently. Always use the method and thresholds associated with the prediction you are following.

Why are temperatures capped?

Development is assumed not to accelerate below the base or above the upper threshold in this method. Capping prevents unusually cold or hot observations from distorting the useful heat estimate.

What base temperature should I use?

Use the base specified for the crop, cultivar, insect, or disease model. A default that is appropriate for corn may be wrong for vegetables, turf, fruit, or pests.

How do I calculate a seasonal total?

Calculate the daily value and add it to prior daily values from the model's designated start date. Keep the formula, unit scale, weather source, and thresholds consistent throughout.

Can GDU predict an exact harvest date?

It can improve development estimates, but it does not capture every environmental and biological influence. Confirm modeled stages with direct field observations and current crop conditions.
