Is Rockwell hardness conversion exact?
No. Conversions are empirical estimates because each scale uses a different load and indenter. Material composition and heat treatment can also shift the relationship.
What is the difference between HRC and HRB?
HRC uses a diamond cone and a heavier major load for hard materials. HRB commonly uses a ball indenter and is better suited to softer metals.
Which scale should I use for hardened steel?
HRC is usually appropriate for hardened steel within its specified range. Very thin or exceptionally hard specimens may require HRA or another supervised test method.
Why can a converted number fall outside a scale's usual range?
The mathematical estimate is not a validity check for the physical test. If the result lies outside a recommended range, select a more suitable scale and test the specimen directly.
Can I use this result on a material certificate?
Use the measured value whenever certification or acceptance depends on hardness. A converted estimate should be identified as converted and checked against the applicable ASTM table.
