About the Wind Chill Calculator
Wind chill is the meteorological term for the cooling effect of wind on exposed skin. When you stand outside on a calm day, your body heat warms a thin layer of air that clings to your skin, acting as insulation. Wind continuously strips away that warm boundary layer, forcing your body to work harder to replace the heat and making you feel significantly colder than the thermometer reading suggests. This is wind chill: not a change in actual air temperature, but a change in how rapidly your body loses heat to the environment.
The modern wind chill index was adopted jointly by the National Weather Service (NWS) and Environment Canada in 2001, replacing an older formula developed by Siple and Passel in 1945. The current formula was derived from wind-tunnel experiments with human volunteers, calibrated to represent the rate at which exposed facial skin loses heat. It is considered the most physiologically accurate general-purpose wind chill formula in use today.
The core NWS formula is: WC = 13.12 + 0.6215 × T − 11.37 × V^0.16 + 0.3965 × T × V^0.16, where T is air temperature in degrees Celsius and V is wind speed in kilometres per hour. The formula is valid when T ≤ 10 °C and V ≥ 4.8 km/h; outside those limits wind has negligible or ambiguous effects and the air temperature is returned as-is.
The 'real feel' temperature extends the basic wind chill by adding the effects of relative humidity and solar radiation. High humidity slightly increases the apparent cold at low temperatures by accelerating evaporation from damp skin. Solar radiation, conversely, can raise the apparent temperature considerably — a sunny but cold day may feel warmer than a cloudy day at the same air temperature and wind speed.
Practically speaking, wind chill is crucial for outdoor safety planning. Frostbite risk rises sharply as wind chill temperatures drop. At −27 °C wind chill, exposed skin can develop frostbite in about 30 minutes. At −40 °C wind chill, frostbite can strike in as few as 10 minutes. Weather services issue wind chill warnings when these thresholds are crossed, advising extra layers, limiting outdoor exposure, and checking on vulnerable individuals.

Wind Chill Calculator FAQ
What is the difference between wind chill and real feel temperature?
Wind chill is calculated solely from air temperature and wind speed using the NWS formula. Real feel (or apparent temperature) is a broader index that also factors in relative humidity and solar radiation — it is more representative of overall thermal comfort but requires additional inputs.
Does wind chill apply in warm weather?
No. The NWS wind chill formula is only valid when air temperature is at or below 10 °C (50 °F) and wind speed is at least 4.8 km/h (3 mph). In warmer conditions the wind does not cool skin below the air temperature; in fact, on a hot day wind can feel refreshing precisely because evaporative cooling dominates convective heat loss.
Can wind chill actually cause frostbite?
Wind chill accelerates heat loss, which increases the rate at which skin temperature drops toward the ambient air temperature. This can greatly speed up frostbite onset compared with calm conditions. At a wind chill of −27 °C, frostbite can occur in about 30 minutes on exposed skin; at −40 °C the risk window drops to roughly 10 minutes.
Why does the formula use wind speed to the power of 0.16?
The exponent 0.16 reflects the physics of convective heat transfer from a bluff body (the human face). Laboratory and wind-tunnel data show that the cooling effect of wind increases rapidly at low speeds but levels off at higher speeds — a logarithmic-like relationship captured by a fractional power. Doubling wind speed does not double the wind chill effect.
Is km/h or mph more accurate for this calculator?
Both are equally accurate — the calculator converts mph to km/h internally before applying the standard formula. Use whichever unit your local weather service reports in. Most countries use km/h; the United States commonly reports wind speed in mph.
