How many semitones are in an octave?
There are twelve semitones in an equal-tempered octave. Moving twelve semitones doubles frequency.
What is the frequency ratio of one semitone?
It is the twelfth root of two, approximately 1.059463. Multiplying by this ratio raises a pitch by one equal-tempered semitone.
What are cents?
Cents divide each equal-tempered semitone into one hundred logarithmic units. They make small tuning differences easier to describe and compare.
Can the semitone value be negative?
Yes, a negative value transposes the starting frequency downward. For example, negative twelve moves down exactly one octave.
Why is an equal-tempered fifth not exactly 3:2?
Equal temperament divides the octave into twelve identical logarithmic steps. Its seven-semitone fifth is slightly narrower than the pure 3:2 ratio.
