IELTS Score Calculator

The International English Language Testing System reports performance in four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section receives a band score from 0 to 9, normally in whole or half-band increments. The overall band score summarizes those four equally weighted results and is often the number requested by universities, immigration authorities, professional bodies, and employers. To calculate the overall score, add the four section bands and divide the sum by four. The resulting average is rounded to the nearest whole or half band. An average ending in .25 moves up to the next half band, while an average ending in .75 moves up to the next whole band. For example, section scores of 8, 7, 7, and 7 average 7.25 and produce an overall band of 7.5. Scores averaging 6.125 round to 6.0, while 6.625 rounds to 6.5. The overall number does not replace individual requirements. A program may ask for an overall 7.0 while also requiring no section below 6.5. Two candidates with the same overall result can therefore have different eligibility. Always compare both the overall band and each component against the exact requirements published by the receiving institution. Academic and General Training tests share the same overall averaging method, although their Reading tests use different raw-score conversion tables. This calculator expects band scores that have already been assigned to each skill; it does not convert numbers of correct Listening or Reading answers into bands. Official score reports remain authoritative, and IELTS test partners may apply their published scoring procedures to the underlying assessment. Use the result for planning, practice-test tracking, and target setting, then verify application rules and official results with the relevant organization. Tracking component scores over several practice tests can reveal whether progress is balanced. A strong average can hide one weaker skill, so record every section and focus study time on the recurring constraint. Admissions deadlines may also require results to remain valid on a particular date; confirm test-date and score-validity policies before booking or submitting an application.
