How to estimate diamond carat weight
- Measure the minimum and maximum girdle diameter in millimeters and average them.
- Measure the total depth from table to culet in millimeters.
- Enter both measurements without converting them to centimeters.

Is carat the same as diamond size?
Carat measures mass rather than visible diameter. Cut proportions can make diamonds of equal weight appear different in face-up size.
How accurate is a dimensional estimate?
Careful measurements of a normally proportioned round brilliant often provide a useful approximation. Unusual girdles, pavilion shapes, or measurement errors can make the result differ from scale weight.
Why do I enter an average diameter?
Round diamonds are rarely perfect circles, so laboratories record minimum and maximum diameters. Their average represents the diameter used by the standard weight formula.
Can I calculate a mounted diamond?
You can estimate it if the setting allows reliable diameter and depth measurements. Prongs and bezels often hide part of the stone, so mounted results may be less precise.
Does depth percentage determine cut quality?
Depth percentage is one useful proportion, but it cannot grade cut by itself. Table size, angles, symmetry, polish, and light performance must also be assessed.
