A moderate display often uses about one hundred lights per vertical foot on a normally shaped tree. This calculator also considers width, so a slim tree receives a lower and more realistic estimate.
Does the estimate include the back of the tree?
The result assumes the entire tree will be decorated. For a tree placed tightly against a wall, reducing lights and ornaments by roughly twenty-five percent is usually reasonable.
How much extra garland should I buy?
The estimate supports a relaxed spiral at nine feet per foot of tree height. Add ten to twenty percent for deep swags, bows, overlaps, or mistakes during placement.
Can I use the calculator for an artificial tree?
Yes, the same dimensions and visual-density guidelines apply to artificial trees. Pre-lit trees may need no additional lights, but the ornament and garland estimates remain useful.
Should I round light strands up or down?
Round up to the next available strand size so coverage remains even. Confirm the manufacturer's connection limit and avoid overloading outlets or extension cords.
