How accurate is a tap BPM counter?
With 6 to 10 steady taps, typically within about 1 BPM of the true tempo, because averaging the last 8 taps cancels most human timing jitter (which is on the order of 20 to 40 ms per tap). For a studio-quantized track, tapping through two full bars usually nails the whole-number tempo exactly.
Why does my reading look like half or double the expected tempo?
You are tapping a different metric level than the listed tempo. Drum and bass at 174 BPM often feels like 87 because the snare lands only on beat 3; conversely, tapping every eighth note doubles the reading. If the number seems off for the genre, try doubling or halving it.
How many taps do I need before the number is trustworthy?
At least 4 taps for a rough reading and 8 for a stable one. The counter averages the intervals between your most recent 8 taps, so after 8 taps additional tapping simply keeps the average fresh — useful for checking whether a live drummer is rushing or dragging.
What is the milliseconds-per-beat number for?
