About this vocal range test
Your vocal range is the distance between the lowest and the highest note you can sing with a steady, controlled tone — not a squeak or a growl, but a note you could actually hold in a song. This test measures it directly: the microphone signal is analyzed in your browser with an autocorrelation pitch detector (the same normalized method used in tuning apps), each detection is median-smoothed, and a note is only captured once you hold the same pitch for at least six tenths of a second. That stability rule matters, because scoops, vibrato onsets, and breathy attacks all produce momentary false readings that a naive tester would happily record as your range.
The test runs in two passes. First sing downward to your lowest comfortable note — a relaxed, dark vowel like "ah" works best — and hold it until the display captures it. After a short pause, sing upward to your highest comfortable note and hold that. Falsetto counts if you can sustain it musically, but most classifications are based on the modal (chest and head) voice, so try both and compare. The result shows your range as note names, the exact frequencies, and the span in octaves and semitones; an octave is twelve semitones, and a typical untrained singer spans around one and a half to two octaves.
The voice-type suggestion compares your endpoints against the six standard classical ranges: Bass E2 to E4, Baritone A2 to A4, Tenor C3 to C5, Contralto F3 to F5, Mezzo-soprano A3 to A5, and Soprano C4 to C6. The classifier is a nearest-match: for every type it adds the distance in semitones between your lowest note and that type's lowest note to the distance between your highest note and its highest note, and picks the type with the smallest total; a tie goes to the lower voice type. So a G2 to A4 range lands on Baritone because it misses that range by only two semitones, while it misses Bass and Tenor by eight. Treat the label as a starting point, not a verdict — real classification also weighs where your voice sounds fullest (the tessitura), your comfortable passaggio points, and timbre, which is a job for a voice teacher.

How to test your vocal range
Warm up for a minute or two first — hum a few scales. Cold vocal cords understate your range and strain more easily.

Vocal range test FAQ
How does the test decide my voice type?
By nearest match against the six standard ranges (Bass E2 to E4, Baritone A2 to A4, Tenor C3 to C5, Contralto F3 to F5, Mezzo-soprano A3 to A5, Soprano C4 to C6). It sums, in semitones, how far your lowest note is from each type's lowest and your highest from its highest, and picks the smallest total. It is a useful first estimate, but real voice classification also depends on tessitura and timbre, which need a teacher's ear.
Why does the tester ignore some notes I sing?
A note is only captured after you hold the same pitch steadily for about 0.6 seconds. Scoops, cracks, vibrato onsets, and breathy attacks produce unstable readings that are deliberately discarded, and very quiet singing falls below the noise gate. Sing a clear, sustained vowel at normal volume and the capture is quick.
Should I include falsetto or vocal fry in my range?
Convention says count what you can sustain musically. A controlled, resonant falsetto note is usually accepted at the top, while a whistle-register squeak or a vocal fry rumble at the bottom is normally quoted separately. This tester detects from about C2 up to beyond C6, so extreme fry below that range will not register anyway — test both with and without falsetto and quote whichever is honest for your singing.
What is a normal vocal range?
Most untrained adults manage about 1.5 to 2 octaves comfortably; trained singers commonly reach 2.5 to 3 octaves, and exceptional voices go further. Span matters less than where the voice sits — two singers can both span two octaves yet be a bass and a tenor. Range also grows with technique, so retest after a few months of practice.
The test says Tenor but my choir calls me a Baritone. Which is right?
Both can be. Range endpoints put you near a category boundary, but choirs assign parts by tessitura — where your voice stays comfortable for a whole rehearsal — plus blend and timbre. If your extremes reach tenor territory yet your voice tires above E4, a baritone part is the right call. Use this result as data, not a contract.
Is my singing recorded or sent anywhere?
