Sobriety Calculator
Estimate current blood alcohol concentration and time to sober using body weight, drinks, elapsed time, and personal factors.
Reproduce the source alcohol-metabolism estimate and review impairment, legal-status, and health-risk guidance.

Sobriety calculation examples
Examples demonstrate the exact source formula; displayed BAC values should not be used to determine driving safety.
| Drinking profile | Source estimate | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 70 kg male, age 30, 4 drinks, no elapsed time, no food | 0.001 percent BAC; about 4 minutes | Uses the male distribution ratio and base metabolism rate. |
| 60 kg female, age 40, 6 drinks, no elapsed time, with food | 0.002 percent BAC; about 6 minutes | Food reduces the source initial estimate by twenty percent. |
| 80 kg male, age 55, 5 drinks, 1 hour elapsed, with medication | 0.000 percent BAC; 0 minutes | Elapsed elimination exceeds the source initial estimate. |
| 65 kg female, age 70, 3 drinks, no elapsed time, moderate liver impairment | Longer elimination than the healthy-liver setting | Age and liver factors reduce the modeled hourly metabolism rate. |
How to use the sobriety calculator
- Enter body weight in kilograms, age, number of standard drinks, and hours since the first drink.
- Choose gender and drink type, then indicate whether alcohol was consumed with food.
- Select medication use and the closest liver-health option.
- Choose Calculate Sobriety Time and review the estimate with the safety limitations on this page.
Sobriety calculator FAQ
Can this calculator tell me when I can drive?
No. It is only a mathematical estimate and cannot measure your BAC, reaction time, or legal fitness to drive. Use a sober transport plan after drinking.
Does coffee make alcohol leave the body faster?
No, caffeine may make someone feel more awake but does not significantly accelerate alcohol elimination. Feeling alert is not the same as being unimpaired.
What counts as one standard drink?
Definitions vary by country, but a standard drink represents a specified amount of pure alcohol rather than one container. Strong or large servings can contain more than one standard drink.
Why does food change the estimate?
Food can slow absorption and reduce the peak concentration compared with drinking on an empty stomach. It does not neutralize alcohol or guarantee a safe BAC.
What should I do if alcohol poisoning is possible?
Call emergency services immediately for unconsciousness, abnormal breathing, seizures, repeated vomiting, or blue or pale skin. Stay with the person and follow dispatcher instructions.
