About mcg and IU conversion
Micrograms measure mass, while International Units measure biological activity. That distinction is why there is no universal mcg-to-IU multiplier. The correct conversion depends on the nutrient and, for some vitamins, its chemical form. This converter applies established label-conversion factors for vitamin D2, vitamin D3, preformed vitamin A as retinol, natural vitamin E, and synthetic vitamin E. For vitamin D, one microgram equals 40 IU. For preformed vitamin A, one microgram of retinol equals approximately 3.3333 IU. Vitamin E requires separate factors because natural and synthetic alpha-tocopherol have different activity per unit of mass.
Use the exact form printed on the supplement or medicine label. Retinol should not be confused with beta-carotene, and natural d-alpha-tocopherol should not be confused with synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol. A conversion can accurately restate a dose in another unit, but it cannot establish whether that dose is appropriate. Recommended intake, tolerable upper limits, age, pregnancy, medical conditions, and interactions all matter. Product labels may also state vitamin E in milligrams rather than micrograms; remember that 1,000 micrograms equals one milligram before comparing values.
International Units are substance-specific by design. Vitamins without an accepted IU definition, including vitamin K, should not be converted using a borrowed factor.
