What is the pack-year formula?
Multiply cigarettes per day by years smoked, then divide by cigarettes per pack. The standard calculation often uses 20 cigarettes as one pack.
Do former smokers count all prior years?
Yes, pack-years describe lifetime cumulative exposure and remain part of the history after quitting. Time since quitting is a separate and clinically important factor.
Can I add different smoking periods?
Yes, calculate pack-years for each period with a different daily average and add them together. This is usually more accurate than using one rough lifetime average.
Does a low pack-year result mean no risk?
No amount of cigarette smoking is risk-free, and pack-years are only one risk factor. Symptoms and individual medical history still deserve appropriate evaluation.
Can pack-years measure vaping or cigars?
Not reliably, because the formula was developed for cigarettes and does not capture different products or inhalation patterns. Report those exposures separately to a clinician.
