What is the oxygenation index formula?
OI equals FiO2 multiplied by mean airway pressure and 100, divided by PaO2. The result rises when more oxygen or pressure is required for a given arterial oxygen level.
Should FiO2 be a decimal or percentage?
Enter FiO2 as a decimal, such as 0.50 for 50 percent oxygen. Entering 50 would make the result one hundred times too large.
How is OI different from the P/F ratio?
The P/F ratio compares PaO2 with FiO2 only. OI also incorporates mean airway pressure, reflecting the ventilator pressure used to achieve oxygenation.
What oxygenation index is severe?
This tool labels values of 25 or more as severe for general education. Clinical thresholds vary, so teams should use age-appropriate guidelines and serial measurements.
Can OI guide ventilator settings by itself?
No, it is one calculated measure within a much broader assessment. Ventilator management requires clinical expertise and consideration of gas exchange, mechanics, hemodynamics, and diagnosis.
