- Measure transmitral pressure half-time from an appropriate continuous-wave Doppler tracing.
- Enter the LVOT diameter and velocity-time integral from properly aligned acquisitions.
- Enter the mitral inflow velocity-time integral using the same cardiac conditions.
- Compare the two calculated areas and review discrepancies with the complete echocardiogram.
Frequently asked questions
What is the pressure half-time formula?
The conventional estimate is 220 divided by pressure half-time in milliseconds. The empirical relationship can be inaccurate when chamber compliance or loading conditions are abnormal.
How does the continuity equation work?
It assumes stroke volume through the LVOT equals forward stroke volume through the mitral valve. LVOT area multiplied by LVOT VTI is divided by mitral inflow VTI.
Why can the two methods disagree?
Each method has different measurement and hemodynamic assumptions. Regurgitation, irregular rhythm, compliance changes, poor Doppler alignment, or LVOT diameter error can produce disagreement.
What area indicates severe mitral stenosis?
An area below 1.0 square centimeter is commonly described as severe by area, while many guidelines consider 1.5 square centimeters or less clinically significant. A clinician must integrate gradients, flow, symptoms, and valve anatomy.
Can this calculator replace echocardiographic interpretation?
No. It performs equations from entered measurements but cannot judge image quality, rhythm selection, morphology, or whether a method is valid for a particular patient.
