About the gut microbiome score

The gut microbiome is the community of bacteria, archaea, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms that inhabit the digestive tract. Research links features of this ecosystem with digestion, immune signaling, metabolism, and resistance to some pathogens. However, there is no universally accepted single microbiome health score. Healthy communities vary substantially between people, across geography and diet, and within the same person over time. This educational calculator follows the factors shown in the legacy page. It assigns up to thirty points for the combined logarithmic abundance of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, up to twenty for their balance relative to E. coli, fifteen for stool consistency near Bristol type 4, fifteen for fewer digestive symptoms, fifteen for fiber intake, and five for longer recovery time since antibiotics. These components sum to a maximum of one hundred. Scores of 80 or more are labeled excellent, 65 through 79 good, 40 through 64 moderate, and below 40 poor. Colony-forming units per gram are entered on a logarithmic biological scale, so a tenfold difference matters more than a small absolute difference. Results from culture, quantitative PCR, metagenomic sequencing, and consumer testing platforms are not directly interchangeable. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus contain many species and strains with different functions, while E. coli includes harmless commensal strains as well as pathogens. A higher or lower count cannot be interpreted without the assay, reference population, sample handling, and clinical context. Stool consistency is represented by the Bristol Stool Form Scale, where types 3 and 4 are often considered typical. Symptom frequency is a simple zero-to-ten self-report, not a validated disease instrument. Fiber supports fermentation and short-chain fatty-acid production for many people, but rapid increases can worsen bloating and may not suit every gastrointestinal condition. Recent antibiotics can reduce diversity, yet necessary antibiotics should never be avoided or stopped because of this score. Use the result to explore patterns rather than diagnose dysbiosis, infection, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, or food intolerance. Persistent pain, bleeding, fever, dehydration, unexplained weight loss, anemia, nighttime symptoms, or a major change in bowel habits warrants professional care. A clinician or registered dietitian can interpret symptoms, medicines, diet, and appropriate testing far more reliably than a composite score.
