Frequently asked questions
Is BMI calculated differently for women?
No, the adult BMI equation is the same for all sexes. Women's life stage and body composition can still affect how a result is interpreted.
What BMI is considered healthy for women?
The standard adult screening range is 18.5 through 24.9. Individual health and appropriate goals cannot be determined by that number alone.
Can BMI be used during pregnancy?
Current pregnancy weight is not interpreted with ordinary BMI categories in the usual way. Clinicians often use pre-pregnancy BMI when discussing recommended weight gain.
Does menopause affect BMI?
The formula does not change, but menopause can coincide with changes in muscle and fat distribution. Waist size and other health markers may add important context.
Does BMI measure body fat?
No, BMI cannot distinguish fat, muscle, bone, or water. It is one screening measure that works best alongside other health information.
