About 20/20 vision and visual acuity

Visual acuity describes how well the eye resolves fine detail at a specified distance. In the United States it is commonly written as a Snellen fraction such as 20/20. The first number is the testing distance in feet. The second number is the distance at which a person with standard reference acuity could resolve the same optotype. A 20/40 result means the tested person must be 20 feet away to see detail that the reference observer could see at 40 feet. A smaller denominator generally represents sharper distance acuity, while a larger denominator represents reduced acuity. A standard Snellen optotype is designed so its full height subtends five minutes of arc at the rated viewing distance, while critical strokes subtend one minute. This calculator uses that geometric relationship. It first determines the distance at which the entered letter height would subtend five arc minutes, then scales that distance to a numerator of 20 feet. A letter about 0.0291 feet high viewed from 20 feet therefore corresponds approximately to 20/20. Doubling the letter height at the same distance produces approximately 20/40. Decimal acuity is the numerator divided by the denominator, so 20/20 equals 1.00 and 20/40 equals 0.50. The calculation can help explain chart design, compare optotype sizes, or check a carefully prepared home demonstration. It cannot reproduce a clinical visual acuity test by itself. Screen size, browser zoom, display resolution, room illumination, contrast, glare, viewing distance, chart calibration, and whether one or both eyes are tested can all change the observed result. Memorizing letters or squinting can also make an informal measurement misleading. Clinical charts use validated optotypes and standardized spacing rather than ordinary text. Visual acuity is only one part of eye health. A person can read a 20/20 line and still have problems involving peripheral vision, color vision, focusing, eye alignment, contrast sensitivity, the retina, or the optic nerve. Refractive correction also affects the result, so clinicians record whether testing was performed without correction, with glasses, or with contact lenses. Use this estimate for education rather than self-diagnosis. Arrange a professional eye examination for persistent blur, headaches, double vision, difficulty driving, or a meaningful difference between the eyes. Sudden vision loss, a curtain-like shadow, new flashes with many floaters, severe eye pain, or a new neurologic symptom requires urgent medical evaluation.
