About Silver Melt Value

The silver melt calculator estimates the fine-metal value of sterling, coin silver, or bullion from weight, purity, and spot. Refiners, jewelers, and scrap sellers use melt value as the ceiling before furnace loss, labor, and dealer margin. Fine ounces equal troy ounces times purity as a decimal: 10 ounces of 92.5% sterling contain 9.25 ounces of fine silver. Multiply by the spot price per troy ounce to get melt value in the same currency as the price. Use troy ounces, not avoirdupois ounces or grams, because London and COMEX silver quotes are per troy ounce. Divide grams by 31.1035. Purity is a percent: sterling 92.5, U.S. coin silver often 90, and many poured bars 99.9. A “sterling” stamp is not an assay; plated ware and filled pieces will overstate melt if you enter the full object weight at 92.5%. Weigh only the silver portion. Melt value is not what a shop pays and not what it costs to run a torch. Refining loss, slag, and bid-ask spreads sit below spot. Casting grain, shot, and jewelry scrap can assay differently from the hallmark. If you are deciding whether to melt a set of flatware, compare melt with the antique premium: intact marked sets sometimes sell for more as objects than as metal. Spot silver moves quickly. Recalculate with a live bid, not a week-old chart, before you commit to a sale or a melt job. Jewelers who recast scrap into new rings still start from this melt number, then subtract expected furnace loss of one to three percent on a clean sterling melt and more on dirty lots. What purity is sterling?

Sterling is 92.5% fine silver. Enter 92.5, not 925, unless you convert 925 parts per thousand into 92.5 percent.

Will I receive this amount from a refiner?

Usually less. Settlement is melt minus a returnable-rate or refining fee, and small lots pay a weaker percentage than industrial bars.

Can I enter grams in the weight field?

Only after converting to troy ounces. Gram weight times a per-ounce price will overstate melt by a factor of about 31.
