About this calculator

A net operating assets (NOA) calculator measures capital tied up in the operations of a business after operating liabilities are deducted. You may enter operating assets and operating liabilities directly, or provide total assets, non-operating assets, total liabilities, and non-operating liabilities so the operating balances can be derived. The calculator reports net operating assets, net non-operating assets, and operating asset and liability ratios. It is useful in financial-statement analysis, return-on-net-operating-assets work, valuation preparation, and coursework. When direct operating values are supplied, the core formula is NOA = operating assets − operating liabilities. When direct values are not available, operating assets equal total assets − non-operating assets and operating liabilities equal total liabilities − non-operating liabilities; the same NOA formula is then applied. Net non-operating assets equal non-operating assets minus non-operating liabilities. Operating asset ratio is operating assets ÷ total assets, and operating liability ratio is operating liabilities ÷ total liabilities. Ratios are shown as percentages when their denominator is positive. Operating assets commonly include receivables, inventory, property used in production, and other resources required to generate operating profit. Operating liabilities may include payables, accrued operating expenses, and deferred revenue. Cash beyond operating needs, investments, and financing debt are often classified as non-operating, but the correct classification depends on the company and analysis objective. Consistency matters more than any single convention when comparing years or peers. Use figures from the same balance-sheet date and currency, and avoid mixing average balances with ending balances unless your wider analysis calls for it. A larger NOA is not inherently good or bad: it may support revenue, or it may reveal capital intensity and working-capital pressure. Pair the result with operating income, sales, turnover, and cash flow to assess efficiency.
