About man-hours and labor cost
A man hours calculator converts a crew plan into total labor time and, if you provide a rate, a labor-cost estimate. Project managers, contractors, and operations teams use man-hours to staff a job, compare bids, and see whether a deadline is realistic. One man-hour is one worker working one hour. Four people working eight hours for five days produce 160 man-hours, not 40 clock hours. The man hours calculator multiplies Number of Workers by Hours per Worker per Day by Project Days. Estimated labor cost is that total times Hourly Labor Rate. Enter 0 for the rate if you only need time. The model assumes every worker is available for every hour of every project day, so it does not subtract breaks, sick leave, meetings, or weather delays unless you reduce hours or days yourself. Crew mix matters. A blended hourly rate can represent several trades; a single rate cannot capture overtime multipliers, union scale, per-diem, or burdened cost with payroll taxes and benefits. If overtime is likely, either raise the rate or split the job into regular-time and overtime scenarios. Subcontractor lump sums are outside this hours × rate structure. Calendar time is not the same as man-hours. A 160-hour job can be one person for twenty 8-hour days or four people for five days. The calculator answers the hours and cost question; sequencing, critical path, and equipment constraints still decide whether those days are feasible. Part-time days are modeled by lowering Hours per Worker per Day, for example 6 instead of 8. Use the man hours calculator to quote a five-day crew, to size a short three-day task, or to produce a time-only plan with a $0 rate. Compare the total hours with historical jobs of similar scope, then add a contingency if productivity is uncertain. Confirm actual wage rates, overtime rules, and burden with payroll or the contractor before you lock a bid.

What is a man-hour?
A man-hour is one hour of work by one person. Ten man-hours can be one worker for ten hours or ten workers for one hour; the man hours calculator reports the total effort, not the calendar duration by itself.
Does the estimate include overtime or benefits?
No. Labor cost is total hours times the hourly rate you enter. Overtime multipliers, payroll taxes, benefits, travel, and per-diem are not added, so a burdened or overtime rate must be entered if you want those costs included.
How do I model part-time or staggered crews?
Lower Hours per Worker per Day for shorter shifts, or run separate calculations for each crew and add the hours. The formula assumes every worker works the same hours on every project day.
Why would I enter a $0 hourly rate?
A zero rate produces a time-only estimate so you can staff a schedule before wages are known. Total man hours still calculate; estimated labor cost shows $0.00 until you enter a positive rate.
Is total man-hours the same as project duration?
Not necessarily. Duration depends on how you split the hours across people and days, plus non-labor constraints such as inspections or material lead times. Use the hours figure for effort and cost, then map it onto a calendar separately.
