About Employee Turnover Rate

Employee turnover rate states how many people left during a period relative to average headcount. HR, finance, and operations leaders use it to budget recruiting, watch retention risk, and compare sites. The employee turnover rate calculator divides separations by average headcount, where average headcount is the mean of beginning and ending employee counts, then multiplies by 100 to express a percent. With 20 separations and 100 employees at both the start and end of the year, average headcount is 100 and turnover is 20%. With 15 separations, 80 beginning employees, and 100 ending employees, average headcount is 90 and turnover is 16.67%. With 5 separations, 50 beginning, and 40 ending, average headcount is 45 and turnover is 11.11%. The result is a period rate, not an automatic annual rate; if your inputs cover a quarter, say so when you present the figure. Decide whether separations include only voluntary quits, or also retirements, involuntary exits, and internships that end on schedule. Mixing those definitions with a peer who counts only voluntary quits makes a “high turnover” story misleading. Headcount should use the same employee definition as the separation count: people, not FTE, unless both sides are FTE. Average of beginning and ending is a simple approximation. A plant that staffs 200 all year and 400 for a two-week peak will not be well described by year-end snapshots. Use a monthly average when seasonality is large. The calculator does not estimate replacement cost, even though that cost often runs to a fraction of salary. Recalculate when payroll headcount is restated, and keep the period length next to the percent so a 8% quarterly rate is not mistaken for an 8% annual rate. Internal transfers sometimes get coded as separations in one department and hires in another. If you are measuring company-wide turnover, exclude intra-company moves so the numerator counts people who actually left the employer. For a single department, include transfers out if the goal is to measure local disruption. Write down the rule you used; otherwise next quarter’s rate will not be comparable.

Should I count only voluntary quits?

Count the exits that match the question you are asking. Voluntary turnover informs retention; total turnover informs recruiting load. Do not mix definitions across sites.

Do I include employees who joined and left in the same period?

Yes, if they separated. They add to the numerator. They may barely appear in beginning or ending counts, which is a known limitation of two-point averages.

How do I annualize a monthly rate?

This calculator does not annualize. A common approximation is monthly rate × 12, but that overstates if the same seats turn repeatedly. Prefer a true twelve-month separation total over average monthly headcount.

Should headcount be FTE or people?

Use people if separations are people. Using FTE in the denominator and person-exits in the numerator understates turnover for part-time heavy workforces.

What if beginning plus ending is zero?

The rate is undefined. You cannot divide by a zero average headcount, so the calculator rejects that case.
