About the DPO Calculator
Days payable outstanding, or DPO, estimates how long a business takes on average to pay suppliers for inventory and other purchases recorded in accounts payable. This DPO Calculator uses beginning and ending payables to create an average balance, then relates that balance to cost of goods sold over the same reporting period. Managers, lenders, investors, and procurement teams use the measure to understand working-capital timing. DPO is most informative as a trend or as a comparison with businesses that have similar products, purchasing cycles, and supplier terms.
The calculation begins with average accounts payable: beginning payable plus ending payable, divided by two. DPO then equals that average divided by COGS, multiplied by the number of days in the period. For example, average payables of $27,500 and annual COGS of $200,000 produce a DPO of 50.19 days when the period contains 365 days. The supporting daily-COGS output expresses the purchasing cost consumed per day, while payables turnover shows how many times the average payable balance is effectively paid during the period.
A rising DPO can preserve cash because the business holds cash longer before payment. It may reflect better negotiated credit terms, seasonality, a deliberate working-capital policy, or growing purchasing volume. It can also signal payment stress, disputes, shortages, or deteriorating supplier relationships. A falling DPO may indicate early-payment discounts, stronger liquidity, reduced purchases, or suppliers demanding faster payment. Neither direction is automatically good or bad. Review payment terms, discounts, vendor concentration, inventory levels, and the company's cash-conversion cycle before reaching a conclusion.
Use figures from the same accounting period and apply the same definition of COGS across comparisons. Service companies may have little COGS, while manufacturers and retailers can have material inventory cycles; this makes cross-industry comparisons misleading. Purchases are theoretically the most direct denominator, but COGS is commonly used when purchases are not available. Large acquisitions, currency changes, and year-end inventory builds can distort a simple average. The calculator provides a clear estimate for analysis, not a replacement for a detailed accounts-payable aging report, audited financial statements, supplier contracts, or professional financial advice.
