PPM to mg/L FAQ
Is 1 PPM always equal to 1 mg/L?
No. The values are numerically equal for a solution with density 1 g/mL, which closely describes dilute water. Other liquids require the density adjustment shown by this calculator.
Why does solution density matter?
PPM by mass compares the solute mass with the total solution mass, while mg/L uses solution volume. Density connects that mass ratio to the mass contained in one liter.
What density should I use for water?
A value of 1 g/mL is appropriate for many routine dilute-water estimates. For high-precision work, use the measured density at the sample temperature because water density changes slightly with temperature.
Can this convert gas PPM to mg/L?
Not by itself. Gas conversion also depends on molecular weight, temperature, and pressure, so a gas-specific equation is required.
Can I use this for seawater or concentrated solutions?
Yes, if the PPM value is mass by mass and you know the solution density. Salinity and dissolved material change density, so do not automatically use the pure-water value.
