What is the metric system?
The metric system is a decimal measurement system built around units such as the meter, kilogram, and liter. Modern scientific and international use is standardized through the International System of Units.
Are conversion factors exact?
Several factors used here are exact international definitions, including 25.4 millimeters per inch and 0.45359237 kilogram per pound. Displayed answers may be rounded to keep them readable.
Does the converter use US or imperial gallons?
The volume category uses US liquid gallons and US fluid ounces. A UK imperial gallon is different, so do not substitute it without using its specific factor.
Why is temperature conversion different?
Temperature scales have different zero points, so conversion requires an offset as well as multiplication. That is why Celsius and Fahrenheit cannot be converted with one constant ratio.
How many decimal places should I keep?
Keep enough digits for the precision of the original measurement and the needs of your task. Extra calculator digits do not make an imprecise source measurement more accurate.
