What is the difference between a dimension and a unit?
A dimension identifies the physical kind of quantity, such as length or time. A unit is a particular measurement scale for that dimension, such as meters or seconds.
Why can I not convert meters to kilograms?
Meters measure length while kilograms measure mass, so they are dimensionally different. A separate physical relationship, such as density and volume, would be needed to connect them.
How do conversion factors work?
A conversion factor is a ratio of equivalent quantities and therefore equals one physically. Multiplying by it changes the written unit while preserving the measured quantity.
Can dimensional analysis prove an equation is correct?
No, but it can show that an equation is inconsistent when dimensions do not match. A dimensionally consistent equation may still contain an incorrect constant or physical assumption.
How should compound units be converted?
Convert every component and apply its exponent to the conversion factor. Area factors are squared, volume factors are cubed, and denominator units use reciprocal factors.
