What does dBm measure?
dBm measures absolute power on a logarithmic scale referenced to one milliwatt. A value of 0 dBm is therefore exactly 1 mW.
How many watts is 30 dBm?
Thirty dBm is exactly 1 watt. It is also 1,000 milliwatts or 1,000,000 microwatts.
Can dBm be negative?
Yes, negative dBm values represent positive power below one milliwatt. For example, -30 dBm equals one microwatt.
Why does a 10 dB change multiply power by ten?
The dBm scale is based on a base-10 logarithm multiplied by ten. Reversing that logarithm means every 10 dB step changes linear power by a factor of ten.
Is dBm the same as dBW?
No, dBm is referenced to one milliwatt and dBW is referenced to one watt. Subtract 30 from dBm to obtain the equivalent dBW value.
