About the CGS system of units

The centimetre-gram-second system, usually shortened to CGS, is a coherent metric system built from the centimeter for length, gram for mass, and second for time. It predates the modern International System of Units, or SI, which instead uses the meter, kilogram, and second as its mechanical base units. Although SI is now standard in most engineering, commerce, and education, CGS units remain common in older scientific literature and in fields such as astrophysics, electromagnetism, spectroscopy, and fluid mechanics. Converting a mechanical quantity is not always as simple as replacing centimeters with meters. Derived units incorporate powers and products of the base units.
