About average ratings

An average rating summarizes a distribution of star votes as one weighted mean. Each vote contributes its star value, so a five-star vote adds five points, a four-star vote adds four points, and so on. The total points are divided by the total number of votes. This differs from averaging the five category counts, which would ignore the score attached to each category and produce a number with no useful rating interpretation. For example, suppose an item receives fifty five-star ratings, thirty four-star ratings, ten three-star ratings, five two-star ratings, and five one-star ratings. Multiplying and summing gives 415 weighted points across 100 votes, so the average is 4.15 out of 5. The calculator performs this weighted calculation directly and also reports the vote total. Counts may be zero, but every input should be a non-negative whole number and the distribution must contain at least one vote. The mean is convenient for sorting products, movies, courses, services, or survey responses, but it does not reveal the shape of the distribution. Two items can both average 4.0 while one has mostly four-star votes and the other has a polarized mix of five-star and one-star votes. Keep the distribution and total review count visible whenever possible. An average based on ten reviews is generally less stable than the same average based on ten thousand reviews, even though the displayed score is identical. Ratings can also be affected by selection bias, changing standards, fraudulent reviews, and rounding. Use unrounded values for comparisons and round only the displayed result. Do not average already-averaged scores unless you weight each subgroup by its review count; otherwise a small subgroup receives the same influence as a large one. When comparing items with very different sample sizes, a Bayesian average or Wilson-style ranking can reduce the advantage of tiny samples with perfect scores. This calculator intentionally returns the ordinary arithmetic weighted mean used by most five-star systems. It is useful for checking dashboard totals, consolidating survey frequency tables, and explaining how an overall rating follows from its underlying votes.

Frequently asked questions

How is the average star rating calculated?

Each star value is multiplied by its vote count and those products are added. The weighted total is then divided by the number of all ratings.

Should ratings with zero votes be left blank?

Enter zero so the distribution is explicit and every field is valid. A zero count contributes neither points nor votes to the result.

Can two different distributions have the same average?

Yes, many distributions can produce the same weighted mean. Always inspect the vote counts because consensus and polarization can look identical in one average.

Can I combine average ratings from multiple sources?

Yes, but combine their weighted point totals and review counts rather than averaging their displayed means. This ensures larger sources receive proportionate weight.

Why does review count matter?

Small samples are more sensitive to each new rating and therefore less stable. A large sample generally provides a more reliable estimate of typical user sentiment.
