Net Force FAQ
What does zero net force mean?
Zero net force means the acceleration is zero. The object may be stationary or moving at constant velocity.
Is net force a scalar or vector?
Net force is a vector with both magnitude and direction. Forces must therefore be combined component by component.
Can a force magnitude be negative?
A magnitude is normally nonnegative, and direction is represented by its angle. This calculator accepts a signed value as an equivalent way to reverse the entered direction.
How does mass affect net force?
Mass does not change the sum of the entered forces. It changes acceleration because the same net force produces less acceleration for a larger mass.
Does net force include gravity?
Gravity is included only if you enter it as one of the force vectors. Include weight and all other relevant external forces in a complete free-body analysis.
