About lightning distance

Lightning produces light and sound at essentially the same instant, but light reaches an observer so quickly that its travel time is negligible at storm distances. Thunder moves through air at only a few hundred meters per second. Measuring the interval between the visible flash and the first thunder therefore provides a practical estimate of how far the discharge occurred. This calculator multiplies the measured delay by an estimated local speed of sound, then reports the distance in kilometers and miles. The familiar safety shortcut divides seconds by five to estimate miles, or divides by three to estimate kilometers. That rule is convenient but assumes typical atmospheric conditions and rounds aggressively. This calculator uses the relation speed = 331.3 + 0.606 times temperature + 0.0124 times relative humidity, where temperature is in degrees Celsius and humidity is a percentage. Warmer and more humid air carries sound slightly faster, so identical delays can represent slightly different distances on different days. Wind, terrain, precipitation, and temperature layers can still bend or delay sound, making every thunder-based result an estimate rather than a survey measurement. Start timing at the moment you see a flash and stop at the first associated thunder. A multi-stroke flash may produce a long rumble because sound arrives from different points along the lightning channel. Use the first clear sound and repeat the measurement for later flashes to understand whether the storm is approaching. A shorter interval means the active lightning is getting closer. Cloud-to-cloud lightning can also create thunder, so the calculated distance describes the nearest audible portion of the discharge rather than necessarily a ground-strike location. Distance does not make exposed outdoor activity safe. Lightning can strike well outside the heaviest rain and beyond the apparent edge of a storm. If you can hear thunder, move promptly into a substantial enclosed building or a hard-topped metal vehicle. Avoid isolated trees, open fields, ridgelines, water, fences, and wired equipment. Follow official weather alerts and the guidance of local emergency authorities. Wait at least thirty minutes after the last thunder before resuming outdoor activity. The calculator is useful for awareness, education, photography planning, and weather observation, but it should support established lightning safety rules rather than replace them.

Why does the flash arrive before thunder?

Light travels vastly faster than sound, so its travel time over a few kilometers is effectively instant to a person. Thunder needs several seconds to cover the same distance through air.

Is the five-seconds-per-mile rule accurate?

It is a useful rounded estimate under ordinary conditions. Temperature and humidity change sound speed slightly, which is why this calculator provides a refined value.

Which part of a long rumble should I time?

Stop timing at the first clear sound associated with the flash. Later rumbling often comes from more distant sections of the same irregular lightning channel.

Can I use the result to decide whether it is safe outside?

No calculated distance guarantees safety because lightning can strike away from visible rain. If thunder is audible, seek proper shelter and follow local weather alerts.

Does wind affect the estimate?

Strong wind and atmospheric layers can alter the path and effective speed of sound. The result is therefore an estimate and may differ from radar or mapped strike data.
