Lightning distance FAQ
Why does the flash arrive before thunder?
Light travels vastly faster than sound, so its travel time over a few kilometers is effectively instant to a person. Thunder needs several seconds to cover the same distance through air.
Is the five-seconds-per-mile rule accurate?
It is a useful rounded estimate under ordinary conditions. Temperature and humidity change sound speed slightly, which is why this calculator provides a refined value.
Which part of a long rumble should I time?
Stop timing at the first clear sound associated with the flash. Later rumbling often comes from more distant sections of the same irregular lightning channel.
Can I use the result to decide whether it is safe outside?
No calculated distance guarantees safety because lightning can strike away from visible rain. If thunder is audible, seek proper shelter and follow local weather alerts.
Does wind affect the estimate?
Strong wind and atmospheric layers can alter the path and effective speed of sound. The result is therefore an estimate and may differ from radar or mapped strike data.
