How to measure hair with diffraction
- Secure a single hair across a low-power laser beam and project the pattern onto a screen.
- Enter the laser's stated wavelength in nanometers.
- Measure and enter the distance from the hair to the screen.
- Measure adjacent fringe spacing in millimeters, preferably by averaging several intervals.

Why does an opaque hair behave like a slit?
Babinet's principle relates diffraction from complementary obstacles and openings. Away from the undiffracted beam, a hair and an equal-width slit produce the same fringe geometry.
Which fringes should I measure?
Measure the center-to-center distance of adjacent corresponding fringes. Accuracy improves if you measure across several intervals and divide by their count.
What laser wavelength should I use?
Use the wavelength printed on the laser, commonly around 532 nanometers for green or 650 nanometers for red. An incorrect wavelength produces a proportional error in diameter.
Why does rotating the hair change the result?
A hair may have an oval cross-section and varying thickness. Rotation changes the projected width that diffracts the beam.
Is the small-angle equation exact?
It is an approximation that is highly effective for ordinary classroom geometry. Greater diffraction angles require trigonometric treatment for the best accuracy.
